The Making Of Macklemore | OUT

How a straight white rapper from Seattle wrote hip-hop’s first gay anthem.

“Each night is different — you never know,” Macklemore says [of “Same Love”]. “To see 6,500 people put their hands up in support of equality is a beautiful thing. It’s honestly been the highlight of touring.”

Love At First Flight. Toronto-based graphic designer, Michael DePippo, posted pictures of his beautiful marriage to his husband, Shaun Robinson. The theme of their wedding was ‘Love At First Flight’ due to the fact that they met each other at the Toronto Pearson Airport on Christmas Eve. They planned and designed the entire wedding themselves with the help of a few friends and family. The result was a unique, very DIY-chic, and memorable event.

Portraits Of The Gay Marriage Revolution | Time
Jake Harrison (31, interior design) and Christopher Cunningham (38, talent agent). Together for 4 years, live in Los Angeles.

Christopher (right): “We met in Brooklyn in 2008 and we pretty much knew a week in that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. Getting married always seemed like something that wasn’t an option and never would be so we tried not to think about it too much. We knew we were happily committed and we made do with that. Now, just because of the way things are changing so quickly, we might get married.”

Call To Action. In a recent speech, Amy Pascal, co-chair of Sony Pictures, challenged the industry to drop gay slurs and stereotypes from movies and TV:

Now it’s time for all of us to take that step. Not every gay character needs to be defined by his or her sexuality. Can’t being gay just be one stitch in the fabric of someone’s life? Can’t we depict men and women who just so happen to be gay – perhaps a lawyer or soldier or business executive or scientist or engineer…
We need to create an atmosphere that encourages people to speak up, so we get this right.
How about next time, when any of us are reading a script and it says words like fag, or faggot – homo – dyke – take a pencil and just cross it out. Just don’t do it.
We can do better and we will do better. We have to. If we just think about that kid in North Dakota, or their parents, we might just do it a little differently.
